I Camel sono nati nel 1971 quando Richard Over, Ian Latimer, Andrew Latimer e Alan Butcher formarono una band chiamata "The Phantom Four", per poi cambiare formazione (Peter Bardens, Andrew Latimer, Andy Ward e Doug Ferguson) e nome, prima "Strange Brew", poi "The Brew". Cambiato il nome definitivamente in "Camel", suonarono il loro primo pezzo al Waltham Forest Technical College appoggiando i Wishbone Ash il 4 dicembre. Nell'agosto del 1972 i Camel siglarono un accordo con la MCA Records e pubblicarono il loro primo album dal titolo Camel.
