Toots & The Maytals furono la prima band ad usare il termine "reggae", nelle canzone "Do the Reggay". Frederick "Toots" Hibbert fondò la band insieme a Nathaniel Mathias e Releigh Gordon a Kingston, in Jamaica, nei primi anni '60. La band registrò il primo album, "Hallelujah", con il leggendario Coxsone Dodd. Presto abbandonarono Dodd e la sua Studio One, e solo allora divennero star. Hibbert venne arrestato nel 1966 per detenzione di marijuana.
