Il 5 Ottobre 1999 Quinn Allman, Branden Steineckert e Ashton Johnson formano una band di nome Dumb Luck. Successivamente ci furono alcuni cambiamenti. Il loro nome cambio' in "Used" quando il cantante Jeph Howard divento il bassista e Bert McCracken diventò il cantante. Spedirono alcune canzoni al produttore John Feldman. Dopo aver sentito "A Box Full of Sharp Objects" lui li richiamò e loro registrarono il loro primo demo. Finito il demo lo spedirono alla casa discografica Reprise Records.
