Dopo lo scioglimento degli Idiot Flesh, Dan Rathbun e Nils Frykdahl con Carla Kihlstedt degli Charming Hostess formarono gli Sleepytime Gorilla Museum a cui si aggiunsero Moe! Staiano e David Shamrock. Suonarono la prima volta il 22 giugno 1999, dove era presente una Banana slug (Ariolimax californicus).[1] La notte seguente fu un vero concerto. Poco tempo dopo la registrazione di Grand Opening and Closing (2001), il batterista David Shamrock lasciò la band e fu sostituito da Frank Grau.
