I Mighty Baby nascono dai resti della band mod, The Action, Alan King (chitarra, voce), Mike Evans (basso) e Roger Powell (batteria). Con l'ingresso in formazione del jazzista Ian Whiteman (voce, flauto, tastiere) e del chitarrista Martin Stone, nel 1968 il gruppo si ribattezza in Mighty Baby. L'esordio è con un album Mighty Baby (1969), con influenze californiane (le loro esibizioni erano paragonate dalla stampa a quelle dei Grateful Dead), rivisitate in un'ottica progressiva tipicamente inglese
