Nato in Sudafrica a Johannesburg il 21 ottobre del 1940 con il vero nome di Manfred Sepse Lubowitz,dove aveva imparato a suonare il piano ed a scrivere canzoni.Sbarca in Gran Bretagna nel 1962.Nel 1963 fonda la Mann Hugg Blues Band,insieme albatterista Mike Hugg.Insieme al cantante Paul Jones(nato a Portsmouth il 24 febbraio 1942 col vero nome di Paul Pond) e al bassista Tom Mc Guinness,debuttano al Marquee .Il primo album,"the five faces of Manfred Mann".
