Joe Bonamassa è nato a Utica, New York, USA, l'8 maggio 1977. All'età di 11, durante un breve periodo in giro per l'america assieme al musicista musicista Danny Gatton ha appreso stili come il jazz e l'heavy rock. Durante questo periodo con Gatton Bonamassa ha assistito a tutti gli show eseguiti dalla band in giro per New York. All'età di 12 anni aprì un concerto di BB King. A 14 anni, è stato invitato a partecipare ad una manifestazione Fender;
