Gli Emperor sono i creatori del symphonic black metal, quindi i primi ad inserire complesse orchestrazioni nell'impasto sonoro tipico del black. La band viene fondata a Notodden nel 1991 da Samoth (Batteria) ed Ihsahn (voce, chitarra). Con l'aggiunta al basso di Mortiis, gli Emperor pubblicano la demo Wrath of the Tyrant. In seguito Samoth passa alla chitarra venendo sostituito alla batteria da Bård Eithun, e con questa nuova line-up gli Emperor
