Mark Potter, Richard Jupp, Craig Potter, Pete Turner e Guy Garvey, si incontrano al college di Bury, cittadina a nord di Manchester. La loro prima band si chiama Soft, prende da U2, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan e Red Hot Chili Peppers e suona chilled funk a Manchester, nel locale underground The Roadhouse. Nel 1999, dopo un lunghissimo anno trascorso a litigare furiosamente con diverse label, dalla Emi alla Island Records, gli Elbow pubblicano finalmente il loro primo singolo New born.
