Nel 1966 un collettivo di jazzisti londinesi anticonformisti e curiosi si costituì nell'ensemble d'improvvisazione AMM. Il chitarrista Keith Rowe, il sassofonista tenore Lou Gare e il bassista Lawrence Sheaff avevano partecipato agli esordi della big band del compositore Mike Westbrook. Il batterista Eddie Prévost aveva lavorato con Gare in un quintetto che si rifaceva all'hard bop di Max Roach e Sonny Rollins. Presto si unirono a loro il compositore Cornelius Cardew e Christopher Hobbs
