Incredible Bongo Band s'est formé en 1972 à l'initiative du joueur de bongo Michael Viner. Après avoir participé à la BOF The Thing with Two Heads, ce projet sort son premier album Bongo Rock en 1973. L'ex-Beatles, Ringo Starr, apparaît sur ce disque. En 1974, Incredible Bongo Band revient avec The Return of the Incredible Bongo Band. Peu de temps après, le groupe se sépare. Après sa séparation, sa musique inspire The Sugarhill Gang, Kool Herc ou encore Grandmaster Flash.
