Die US-amerikanische Hip-Hop-Gruppe Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five entwickelte sich 1977. Sie kam zustande, als Grandmaster Flash erfolgreich gemeinsam mit den Furious Five (Melle Mel, Cowboy, Kid Kreole, Mr. Ness aka Scorpio, Raheem) auftrat. Sie erhielten 1980 einen Plattenvertrag bei Sugar Hill, dem ersten bedeutenden Hip-Hop-Label. Nach einigen erfolgreichen Singles erschien dort 1981 das zweite Hip-Hop-Album überhaupt: The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel
